Full coverage mobile communications in Dresden
City of Dresden and Deutsche Funkturm GmbH establish cooperation for infrastructure development
Dresden, 02.05.2019: On the occasion of the opening of the “connect-ec 2019”, Germany’s first telecommunications expo taking place in Dresden on May 2–5, Dresden’s Mayor Dirk Hilbert and Dr. Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, Managing Director of DFMG Deutsche Funkturm GmbH, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG, agreed today, Thursday 2 May 2019, to work together on developing the city’s mobile communications infrastructure.
“This cooperation is another big step on the road to making Dresden a 5G model region. With Deutsche Funkturm as a partner, we can offer our municipal areas to all mobile communications providers as locations for their network expansion. This lays the foundation for making innovative solutions like intelligent energy systems or future mobility solutions like autonomous and connected driving a reality in our city,” explains Mayor Dirk Hilbert.
“We are thrilled for the opportunity to support the city of Dresden on its way becoming a 5G model region by building sustainable infrastructure. Our locations will help to guarantee full coverage and high-performance services. 5G will provide highly reliable data transmissions in real time, which will allow us to connect everything in the future,” says Dr. Bruno Jacobfeuerborn. For the 5G development, the usual mobile communications infrastructures (so-called macro sites), which are installed on the roofs or buildings or as standalone masts, will be supplemented by smaller mobile communications cells (so-called small cells) to boost capacities. In order to support this expansion, the capital of Saxony will examine which communal buildings, properties or infrastructure components satisfy the requirements for suitable locations and make them available for improving the mobile communications grid.
“Dresden is the cradle of 5G mobile communications, which will positively impact all branches of our economy in the future. But the enormous performance boost in terms of data rate, transmission speed, connection density and latency also facilitates applications that will directly benefit the citizens of our Smart City Dresden,” says Dr. Robert Franke, Head of the capital’s Economic Development Office. In the future, the Internet of Things will interconnect not only machines and factories but also items of everyday use and central sectors like environment, energy and traffic: For example, sensors measure the fill level of waste containers and call the disposal service as needed. Parking sensors guide drivers to free spaces via apps. Buses, trains and stops communicate with one another and react when the number of passengers rises or drops. In smart homes, lawn mowing robots can start autonomously when the grass has reached a certain height. And cars communicate in real time with one another and with their surroundings, resulting in shorter waiting times at red lights and fewer accidents.
Dresden on its way to becoming a 5G model region: The new mobile communications standard will provide efficient and connected infrastructure and pave the way for smart energy systems and much more. Just recently, DREWAG Stadtwerke Dresden GmbH and Deutsche Telekom AG agreed to collaborate on a pilot project for intelligent energy management (monitoring and distribution) in the low voltage grid (an area needed for supplying households) (see press release DREWAG und Telekom kooperieren für die Energiewende of 5 April 2019).
