Better mobile network coverage for Münster
- The city of Münster, Telekom Deutschland, and Deutsche Funkturm execute agreement

Münster, June 7, 2018: Visitors to this year’s Katholikentag (Catholics Day) already benefited from much faster and more stable mobile connectivity. In time for the start of the event, the city of Münster, Telekom Deutschland, and Deutsche Funkturm GmbH had already implemented the first steps to consolidate the mobile communications network. Now the expansion with state-of-the-art small cell technology continues.
At the end of August last year, Mayor Markus Lewe and Deutsche Funkturm’s Managing Director Bruno Jacobfeuerborn signed a joint declaration of intent. The goal of the agreement is to increase the mobile service capacity and to pepare the future communications standard 5G. To this end, Deutsche Funkturm has prepared ten sites for small cells at particularly high-traffic sites in the urban region on behalf of Telekom Deutschland. Telekom has already commissioned small cells in areas such as Bahnhofstrasse/corner of Urbanstrasse at the Central Train Station, on Aegidiistrasse across from the LWL Museum, and on Albersloher Weg between Halle Münsterland and the port. As a result, visitors and residents in these areas benefit from faster mobile internet.
Small cells are small and inconspicuous antennas that supplement the traditional mobile network and provide more bandwidth exactly where the need is highest. They are attached, e.g., to the facades of houses and connected with a fast fiberglass line. “The small cells fit almost invisibly into the cityscape so that they are only noticed due to improved mobile reception,” says Mayor Markus Lewe. “This makes the solution so attractive for Münster: an efficient and future-proof network that doesn’t visually change our beautiful downtown and Old Town.”
“Even today, mobile networks must get increasingly close-knit with smaller parts to manage the growing data volumes,” adds Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, Managing Director of Deutsche Funkturm. “This network consolidation will grow even more with 5G. We will assist Telekom Deutschland in setting up many more small cells in Münster in the next months.”
With its head office in Münster, DFMG Deutsche Funkturm GmbH is part of Deutsche Telekom and supports the company in the expansion of its mobile communications network.
